Can you believe it’s been 25 years since we worried that, at the stroke of midnight on January 1st, 2000, all our systems might fail? I still remember having to add an extra “00” to my student number at Western so the system could continue to recognize me. 25 years. Then, we were worried about whether the technology would still work. Today, we’re worried that it will work too well, but we won’t.
All these changes over the last 25 years have made me think about how much has been actively chosen and how much has just happened to us. This rumination started when I book I am reading spoke of how the opportunity for uncertainty gives the chance to make intentional choices. Too often, we think we are a victim of not having a choice. But truly, we are faced with choices every day. The choice to go with the flow, let the years pass and float along the river, whichever way the stream takes you, is, in itself, a choice. When was the last time you made a big life decision that changed the direction your river flowed? What if you stood up and realized you could get out of the inner tube and go in another direction? When you look back over the last 25 years, what have you intentionally chosen? What have you just let happen? What opportunities have you taken where you decided to stand up, get out of the stream and chart your own path?
Having choice is a beautiful thing. Scary? Yes. But what a wonderful thing to live a life you have designed. It doesn’t mean it will be easy, without challenges or consistently successful. But you do get to be in control. So, this year, I challenge you to think about the different choices you have and be intentional. Understand the why and let that guide you. Going with the flow can be easier, but not when it leads you to places you’d rather not go. Aligning your choices with your purpose, your vision, your values and your goals brings you closer to the life you want to live. So, when there is uncertainty and challenge, don’t wait for others to choose for you; stand up in the lazy river, find your footing against the current and choose where your flow takes you.
If you’re ready to take the next intentional step in your career, here are some opportunities that intersect with career and experiential education. No matter where the next 25 years take you, how uncertain they are, here are some opportunities that might take you to where you want to be.
