Why do you matter? What numbers tell your story well?
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are more than just numbers—they’re stories we tell about our impact. The data we collect often defines how others perceive our value. But are we being thoughtful about what we measure and how we share it?
Let’s face it—some of the most common KPIs, like co-op employment rates, barely scratch the surface of our real contributions. While these metrics are important, they don’t always reflect the full spectrum of all the work we do. We’re shaping futures, fostering skills, and building networks—but how do we measure that?
Here are a few examples of KPIs to consider:
- Student Engagement: How many students participate in career coaching, workshops, or mock interviews? What changes can you track and report as a result of these engagements?
- Skill Development: Can we track how students grow in areas like communication, teamwork, or problem-solving through experiential learning opportunities?
- Employer Partnerships: Beyond counting the number of employers engaged, are we measuring the depth of these relationships and the quality of opportunities they provide? How do you do this?
- Equity & Inclusion: How can we ensure that all students, particularly those from underserved groups, access these opportunities?
Data tells a story—but it’s up to us to choose the narrative. When we rely too heavily on surface-level KPIs, we risk missing the chance to showcase the true impact of our work. Instead, let’s focus on aligning our metrics with our mission and values, tracking not just outcomes but also the journey students take with us.
So, what KPIs are you using? Are they helping you tell your story? Let’s be intentional and thoughtful in showing our value through data. It’s not just about proving our worth; it’s about amplifying the difference we make.
As you ponder your KPIs and how you tell your a story, grab a coffee or a tea and browse the new opportunities in career and experiential education (and some adjacent positions) from across the country. As always, if you have something you want to share, add it to the comments below!
